Genetic structure of fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra) in urban environment
Supervisor: Jana Svobodová, PhD.
Annotation:
The fire salamander is listed as “vulnerable” in the Czech Red List of Threatened Species and their populations are still significantly declining due to degradation and fragmentation of their natural habitats caused mainly by climatic changes and urbanisation. Although various studies investigated in population genetics of fire salamander in it’s natural environment a little is known about genetic diversity and structure of their populations in urban areas. Urban salamander populations however are under high anthropogenic pressure, which can lead to their fragmentation and isolation, subsequently to their next decline or extinction. The goal of the thesis will be to evaluate genetic structure of salamander populations in Prague.
