In August, Ladislav Šmejda cooperated on a research project in southern Crete, where he surveyed the hinterlands of the site of Porti. The survey mainly targeted the Minoan settlement patterns in the area. Beside the Minoan and Roman settlements, an ancient burial cave and a stone quarry were discovered and recorded. Using a portable XRF device, Ladislav investigated the soil chemistry within the study area. Preliminary results have shown that this methodology can be useful in detecting past human activities, especially for mapping spatial distribution of settlement and funerary behaviour in the landscape.
