In the attached pdf file below, you will find contacts for external psychosocial help. If you are not sure which specialist(s) you need, the following text may help you:
Psychologist, psychotherapist or psychiatrist?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose and treat mental, emotional and behavioural conditions. They can prescribe medications and other medical treatments (unlike psychologists).
A psychologist has an accredited Master’s degree in Psychology. They may also have additional psychotherapy training and thus be a psychologist and a psychotherapist at the same time.
A psychotherapist may be a psychiatrist, psychologist or other mental health professional, who has further specialist training in psychotherapy. The psychotherapy training should be accredited by the Czech Association for Psychotherapy.
Should I ask a friend for recommendation?
Yes and no. Ask friends or acquaintances how their therapy went. If you don't want to ask, you can check out the profiles of therapists, for example at Česká asociace pro psychoterapii, z.s. - Foreign therapists (czap.cz). Remember, however, that what matters most is if the therapist "fits" you personally. Seeking help for mental health is NOT a sign of weakness, and if you are hesitant, we recommend reading the following blogs Should I Go to Therapy? 6 Reasons for Seeing a Therapist (psychcentral.com) or 10 Reasons to See a Therapist | Davis Behavioral Health (dbhutah.org).
How much does a therapy session cost?
In the Czech Republic, the price of a therapy session ranges from approximately 700 CZK to 2000 CZK and more. There are psychologists who accept insurance and non-profit organizations that offer low-cost therapy, but they may have a longer waiting list and not all specialists speak English. We recommend you to check if your insurance company provides a contribution for the therapy. You can also consult your GP for a referral to a specialist.
What to look for in therapy?
We recommend asking yourself how you feel with the therapist, whether you feel they listen to you and respect your feelings, thoughts and boundaries. A good therapist will listen to you and help you to explore your situation and see it through a different perspective. A therapist does not judge or advise you what you should or should not do, but helps you find a way to tackle the problem.
I am in an acute mental health crisis, and I can't wait, what should I do?
If you are in an acute mental health crisis and need immediate help, you can use a free telephone crisis line or visit the crisis intervention centres that operate 24/7. You can find them listed in the attached file. Apart from helping you to cope with the crisis, they also provide information about contacts for suitable follow-up care. You can come to a crisis intervention centre without an appointment.
