Is drought a real threat for the Czech Republic? What are the efficient solutions for water retention? How inappropriate agriculture practices affect soil and water quality? Lukas Trakal answered the key questions of the editor of Týden magazine. He mentioned different types of drought (agricultural, meteorological, and hydrological) and the increased contents of nitrates in groundwater (as a result of excessive fertilization), and suggested potential solutions for the issue of drought. He emphasized the importance of soil organic matter for water retention with biochar (pyrolyzed = thermally treated biomass) being one of the most perspective agents that can be applied to soils to improve their natural characteristics.
