We cordially invite you to a seminar entitled "Polluted Sites Characterization and Remediation: from Anthropocene to Nanotechnology" that will be held on December 13, 2018 at 10.00 am in room Z239 (building MCEV I, 2nd floor) at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, CZU Prague.
Polluted sites can seriously impact soil and (ground)water resources. They can increase environmental and health risks, as well as entail economic and social costs. Multicomponent contamination in former industrial and mining sites poses a challenge for site characterization and remediation. Therefore, recent approaches are focused on characterization tools beyond quantitative analyses and on sustainable remediation technologies such as nano-, phyto-, or bio-remediation. Case studies from Hg-As and PAH-contaminated sites will be presented. In addition, cumulative effects of long-term pollution presence on the local "anthropocene" geological records will be discussed.
The seminar will be given by Dr. José Luis R. Gallego, Associate Professor from the Polytechnic School of Mieres at the University of Oviedo (Spain). He holds a PhD in Mining, Environmental and Civil Engineering. Dr. Gallego has performed basic research, but also applied projects in the areas of environmental engineering, organic & inorganic geochemistry, and biotechnology, in cooperation with private industry as well as with public entities, mainly focused on site remediation.
All interested are welcome!
