Abstract:
The mining activity has a bivalent character related to its positive and negative impacts. However, as environmental and economic impacts of mining operations are in the center of interest, the social aspects are often neglected due to their complexity. The presented project is focused on a process of individual acceptance of mining which is crucial for better understanding of its social impacts. The acceptance of mining activities will be analyzed through testing a hypothesized conceptual model that represents determinants of acceptance within three contexts: national, community and individual. A comparative case study approach involving methods of quantitative and qualitative data gathering in three different countries will be applied. The mutually different conditions in selected countries are crucial for the model verification as well as for better understanding of the process of acceptance of mining. The results of the project will be a deeper understanding of current knowledge of factors influencing the acceptance of mining on the national, community and individual levels.
