Abstract:
The main aim of the presented project is to identify, describe and model processes responsible for Cr(VI) retention in soils using a combination of suitable mechanistic surface complexation models (SCM) and spectroscopic investigations. The integration of SCMs and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) will provide a comprehensive insight on the soil sorption complex and it will be helpful for assessing the role of individual soil components responsible for Cr(VI) retention in soils. Additionally, the results will be coupled with Cr isotope analyses (using TIMS) as a novel approach to study the reduction and/or possible re-oxidation of Cr(VI) during adsorption. The project will provide important information about Cr behavior in soil systems highlighting thus its multidisciplinary approach combining mechanistic modeling, spectroscopic and isotope analyses.
