Abstract:
Modification of biochar, a product of biomass pyrolysis, can significantly improve its sorption properties, which is highly valuable for immobilisation of risk metals and metalloids. The synthesis of biochar with nano zero-valent iron provides a unique combination of the advantages of both materials, resulting in efficient adsorption of a wide range of contaminants, both in their cationic and anionic form. However, there is an urgent need to evaluate the behaviour and stability of this progressive composite in soils. Therefore, complex geochemical interactions with soil solution and changes in solid phase will be investigated with respect to retention of risk elements. Different environmental conditions will be simulated to assess the stabilisation efficiency of nanoiron-modified biochar in polluted soils under different seasonal scenarios. Moreover, the data obtained from laboratory adsorption, batch, pot and column experiments will be extrapolated to real-scale scenario using a coherent hydrogeochemical model and finally verified in the field conditions.
