Project title: Satellite images serve Prague: Temperature in the city and quality of Vltava water
Registration number: No. DOT / 54/12/017248/2019
Recipient: Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague
Provider: Magistrát hl. Prague
Principal investigator for the CULS: Mgr. Jan Kropacek, Ph.D.
Name of the program: Grants of the Capital City of Prague - Program to support projects to improve the state of the environment of the capital of Prague for the year 2019
Abstract:
The project focuses on the use of data from the new European Sentinel satellites for environmental monitoring in Prague. The advantage of satellite sensing is the regular overflight of a constellation of two Sentinel-2 satellites scanning with an optical sensor in 12 spectral bands and a pair of Sentinel-1 satellites that scan in the microwave part of the spectrum, which allows the signal to penetrate through the clouds. The data of both systems will be used both for monitoring the quality of surface waters in the capital city of Prague, as well as for monitoring areas that suffer from moisture deficiency and are prone to overheating.
The project aims to make remote sensing accessible as a modern tool to support decision-making on current technical problems of the city of Prague. An information website will be created mediating the possibilities of using satellite images as well as specific information for the citizens of Prague. It will include developed procedures for assessing the quality of water and urban hot islands from Sentinel satellites. These procedures as well as the findings will then be presented to the general public through websites, brochures and seminars. The results will be presented to the professional public in the form of a published scientific article.
The purpose of the project will be to present modern solutions to current technical problems of the city of Prague. The possibilities of remote sensing of the Earth will be presented to both the lay and professional public. The results of the project will be able to serve as a guide for the application of these practices in the decision-making processes of the capital city of Prague.
