Abstract:
The National Center of Competence (NCC) BIOCIRTECH deals with the manufacturing of biomass of microbial, plant, animal and waste origin through chemical, biochemical and physical processes in order to obtain valuable products with high added value that can be used in food production, agriculture and energy industries.
The aim of the center is to create new products from renewable sources that are processed by environmentally friendly technologies, while taking into account current social issues (food sustainability, use of natural resources, sustainable energy).
Bio-chemical, chemical or physical methods can be used for bio-refining in order to obtain valuable and desirable products (new materials, biologically active ingredients, bioplastics, detergents, pharmaceuticals, energy-usable waste, etc.). These products are comparable with similar products coming from mainstream production or could represent products based only on a biological basis. One advantage is that waste from one technology can became input raw material for further technological use. It is obvious that the combination of primary and secondary raw materials or waste based inputs can possibly have an economic impact on product prices.
FES participates in four subprojects within NCC BIOCIRTECH: 01. Animal waste processing, 03. Modification of algal tribes in order to increase the content of fatty acids and carotenoids and development of methods for their effective isolation from biomass, 04. Valorisation of plant biomass by bio-refining procedures and 05 Technologies for utilization of waste biomass.
Within these subprojects, the FES team examines the environmental impact of developed bio-refining technologies using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Risk Assessment (RA) methodology. If the obtained results are favorable, the FES team will prepare documentation for the validation of the developed technologies by the EU Environmental Technology Verification (EU ETV) and the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).
In subprojects no. 03 and 05, the FES team will also examine the utilization of waste from intensive algae production by transforming them into active sorbents for the removal of certain organic pollutants from industrial wastewater. The possibility of using new algae species for assessing ecotoxicity of wastewater will also be tested.
