Abstract
The new birds@farmland initiative of the European Commission supports Member States in conserving wild birds living in agricultural landscapes. Conservation of farmland birds is a Birds Directive obligation that is essential to the success of the EU Green Deal and the Biodiversity and Farm to Fork Strategies. By taking into account scientific evidence and existing experience, the birds@farmland initiative will develop twenty farmland bird conservation schemes in ten Member States* based on agricultural and land management practices proven to work. Member States are invited to consider these conservation schemes in their CAP Strategic Plans.
Sustainable and biodiversity friendly agriculture requires the support of authorities and farmers alike. The birds@farmland initiative will thus involve agricultural and environmental authorities, farmers organisations, NGOs, and experts through workshops and interviews at national and EU levels in the co-creation of conservation schemes. Ultimately, the established networks and tools will provide the framework for long-term collaboration. Information about the initiative and the new schemes will be distributed through national and sector-specific channels to further relevant actors beyond those that directly participate in the consultations and workshops.
Dr. Federico Morelli and his team has been leader of activities related to Identification of 15 Flagship species of farmland birds (WP2). National communication process plays a significant role in the project. Two national workshops will take place under the leadership of Prof. Vladimír Bejcek and MSc. Václav Zámečník.
