We cordially invite you to a seminar where two actual topics will be presented: "Influence of bedrock composition on Arsenic and Molybdenum in soils" (Prof. Valérie Cappuyns) and "Regional contamination characteristics and engineered biochar for environmental remediation" (Dr. Daniel CW Tsang). Both lectures will be held on February 6, 2019 starting at 2 pm in room D222 (building MCEV II, 2nd floor) at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, CZU Prague.
Valérie Cappuyns obtained a Master degree in Bio-science Engineering in 2000, and a PhD degree in Geology in 2004 at KU Leuven (Belgium), where she also was a post-doctoral researcher until 2006. After working for one year as a junior researcher at the Scientific Institute for Public Health, she returned to KU Leuven, where she is currently working as professor at the Faculty of Economics and Business. She teaches several courses in the field of environmental sciences in the Environmental Health and Safety Management bachelor and master program. Research interests include environmental geochemistry (chemical and mineralogical characterization of (heavy metal) contaminated soils, sediments, and waste materials), sustainable management of contaminated sites, life cycle analysis, and environmental impact assessment. She is the (co)author of more than 60 publications in international peer-reviewed journals.
Dan Tsang is currently an Associate Professor and Programme Leader (EOSH) in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He was an IMETE Visiting Scholar at Ghent University in Belgium, Visiting Scholar at Stanford University in the US, Senior Lecturer and Lecturer at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, and Post-doctoral Fellow at Imperial College London in the UK and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. With a strong link to real-world environmental challenges, Dan’s research group strives to develop cost-effective and low-impact solutions to ensure sustainable urban development, enhance the engineering infrastructure, and create new ways in which we utilize biomass waste, contaminated land, and urban water. Dan has published over 240 SCI journal papers and currently serves as Associate Editor of Science of the Total Environment, Critical Reviews in Environmental Science and Technology, Journal of Soils and Sediments, and Environmental Geochemistry and Health, as well as Editorial Board Member of Chemosphere and Bioresource Technology. Dan has also served as Guest Editor of 18 Special Issues at Environment International, Bioresource Technology, Journal of Cleaner Production, Journal of Hazardous Materials, etc., and received the Excellence in Review Award at Environmental Science and Technology and Chemosphere. Dan is the Chair and Organizer of 2nd Biological Waste as Resource Conference (BWR2017), 4th Contaminated Land, Ecological Assessment and Remediation Conference (CLEAR2018), 3rd International Conference on Bioresources, Energy, Environment, and Materials Technology 2018 (BEEM2019), and 5th Asia Pacific Biochar Conference (APBC2020).
