The team from the Faculty of Environmental Sciences at the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (CZU) is part of an international consortium engaged in a comprehensive approach to the protection and restoration of the Danube River basin ecosystems as part of a project funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe program.
According the Danube River Management Plan indicates the majority (52%) of all rivers do not meet the criteria of good chemical status, moreover all monitored indicators deteriorated. The Danube River is an artery of the ecosystems of the whole DRB and the region with significant environmental impact. The river also has an important economic utilization supporting SMEs and creating jobs for locals as well as having a cultural importance. To properly manage this complex and fragile ecosystem we must think of a river basin and harmonize our actions from the Black Forest to the Black Sea.
The DALIA project aims to address this challenge by developing a comprehensive DALIA tool for the Danube River basin. The objective is to integrate all outputs and data into the "Danube Mission Hub," which will facilitate more effective decision-making for the improvement and restoration of freshwater and brackish water ecosystems in the Danube region. This will provide opportunities for setting strategies and policies that are suitable for better connectivity and protection of ecosystems against extreme events and pollution threats.
The DALIA project will directly contribute to the creation of EU and UN initiatives related to the further implementation of the Water Framework Directive and the introduction of innovative actions in various geographical areas. It will be closely linked to related EU missions and project actions within the corresponding spectrum of the Horizon Europe program.
The DALIA project consortium is composed of 22 expert organizations – universities, government agencies, small and medium-sized enterprises, and non-governmental organizations – from 8 different Danube countries in the EU and potential associated countries. This consortium ensures an excellent pool of knowledge, covering not only the geographical area of the basin but also the various areas of expertise necessary to address multidisciplinary issues related to water quality and ecosystem protection from the source areas of the Danube to its entry into the sea.
By participating in the DALIA project, the Faculty of Environmental Sciences at CZU reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and environmental protection at the international level.
